cooperation, 2016
relief print on paper (kitakata)
8 x 10 inches
printed from two carved linoleum blocks
edition size: 30
this edition of prints was inspired by political events and the divided social atmosphere in the united states in late 2016. the artist inked the background block with blue ink, red ink, or these two inks mixed together to produce various purple shades, as she created this series. this print-to-print variation in the numbered series is indicated by “e.v.”, which stands for “edition variable”.
in december 2016, these prints were shared with friends of the artist, along with the following message:
“the events of the past several months have illuminated many issues that divide, and sometimes alienate, us from one another. as 2016 draws to a close and we embark upon a new year, i’ve been considering the remarkable things that people can achieve when they try to understand one another’s needs and collaborate towards mutually supportive ends. i’ve been working on visual representations of such human cooperation, leading to the creation of this edition of prints, which I’ve pulled by hand from two carved blocks. thank you for the opportunity to share this piece with you. wishing you and yours a happy new year.”
