submitted to be considered for the cover of the journal developmental cell, to accompany the client’s research paper:
sweat gland development requires an eccrine dermal niche and couples two epidermal programs
the “dots” in the elephant’s head represent actual data from the client’s paper: a umap projection of clustered epidermal nuclei, colored to show the cell lineage in sweat gland development, that emerged looking very much like an elephant head! and thus (along with the client’s love of rudyard kipling’s “just so stories”) inspired this illustration
